We’ve all seen the headlines. The demand for electric vehicles in Australia is at an all time high. But are they a good purchase for young families? The short answer is – absolutely. You’ve just got to find the right one for you and your family.

Families need a vehicle that’s packed full of space, safety features and a good amount of range, to cover the commute from work, to school, sporting activities, and even the odd road trip or two.

Let’s compare all the electric options available in Australia that combine practical family transport with emissions-free driving.

Our favourite family-friendly electric vehicles at Vyro HQ are (in no particular order):

  1. Volvo XC-40 Electric
  2. Kia EV6
  3. Kia Niro Electric
  4. Hyundai Ioniq 5
  5. Hyundai Kona Electric

Buying an electric car is perfect for any family that’s looking to save time on refuelling, and money on fuel and maintenance and time. The Volvo XC40 Electric is unassuming in many ways. Though it’s a spacious and classy-looking family SUV, it packs some serious performance with 408hp on tap. It’s also quoted to do 0-100km/h in 7.4 seconds and has a driving range of around 510km (WLTP). It’s available in two grades, the single motor (FWD) and twin motor (AWD), so depending on your range and power needs, there are a few options available. A very nice car to drive, it’s a crowd favourite at Vyro HQ.

2. Kia EV6
Rated by the Vyro team: 9/10
Battery range: Up to 528 km WLTP
Price: From $75,000+ drive away

The Kia EV6 is a seriously stylish, yet seriously capable small electric crossover. This head-turner is just as good to drive as it looks, and is brimmed with technology too. It comes powered by a fast-charging 800-volt architecture that delivers an estimated 528 km of driving range on a single charge.

In terms of space, it may not have the biggest boot out there, but you’ll have a good amount of legroom in the back. Unfortunately it’s extremely difficult to get your hands on one in Australia (they’re sold in very small batches). If you’re only interested in a Kia EV6, reach out to our team and we’ll see if there’s anything we can do to get you one.

3. Kia Niro Electric
Rated by the Vyro team: 8.5/10
Battery range: Up to 455 km WLTP
Price: From $71,586 drive away

The Kia Niro Electric is the perfect combination of modern style, SUV versatility, advanced technology, and of course — all-electric efficiency. With an outstanding electric range of 455 kilometres (WLTP), and all the power and advanced technology you need, it’s one of Australia’s leading electric SUVs.

If boot space is a concern for you, then the Kia Niro Electric should answer that. With 451 litres on offer, it’s among the best in class. A great option for larger families who are looking for a zero-emission vehicle with performance and style. It’s available in two trims, S and Sport.

4. Hyundai Ioniq 5
Rated by the Vyro team: 9/10
Battery range: Up to 451km for the RWD, up to 430km for the AWD
Price: From $80,000+ drive away

10-111-1  12-1

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a compact crossover with plenty of exciting technology features to offer. If you’re after a super-spacious interior for cargo and the whole family, look no further than this car. Not only is there loads of room, it feels pretty posh too. If its performance you want, the Long Range RWD produces 160kW and 350Nm, with 0-100km/h coming up in 7.4 seconds. However, the flagship Long Range AWD develops a combined 225kW and 605Nm, slashing the 0-100km/h time to a claimed 5.2 seconds. These are some impressive figures for a practical family hatchback.

Unfortunately, like Kia’s EV6, it’s extremely difficult to get your hands on an Ioniq 5 in Australia (they’re sold in very small batches). If you’re only interested in a Hyundai Ioniq 5, reach out to our team and we’ll see if there’s anything we can do to get you one.

5. Hyundai Kona Electric
Rated by the Vyro team: 8.5/10
Battery range: Up to 485 km WLTP
Price: From $59,346 drive away
